Finnish filmmaker Dome Karukoski will be giving a seminar at the Australian National University Centre for European Studies as part of the Canberra International Film Festival, in conjunction with the Nordic Film Festival. Mr Karukoski’s latest comedy Lapland Odyssey was a box office hit in Finland, and will be screened on the 4th and 6th of November at Dendy. In anticipation of this event, you are cordially invited to join Dome for a discussion about his filmmaking. Dome Karukoski’s seminar will focus on his inspirations, contemporary filmmaking in Finland, and the Finnish film industry’s relationship with the European Union. 

Dome Karukoski, born in 1976, is one of Finland’s most popular contemporary directors. Karukoski has made his mark in the Finnish film canon with a collection of entertaining and memorable works. These include Forbidden Fruit (2009), which follows two girls from a strict Finnish Lutheran sect who discover new experiences and life lessons when they travel to Helsinki. Forbidden Fruit won fifteen awards around the globe. The Home of Dark Butterflies was Finland’s entry into the Academy Awards in 2009 and tells a poignant and hauntingly filmed tale of the trials of isolation and forgiveness. Mr Karukoski’s debut film was Beauty and the Bastard (2005), a romantic coming-of-age drama which was screened at the Berlin International Film Festival and Tribeca, and has won awards for its hip hop and r&b soundtrack.

Film Screenings and Loans: There will be screenings of Forbidden Fruit and Beauty and the Bastard ahead of Mr Karukoski’s seminar. These two films are also available for loan at the School of Cultural Inquiry office. Please ask for them at the office desk.

Forbidden Fruit will be screened on Tuesday 1 November at 6pm in Manning Clark Theatre 5.

Beauty and the Bastard will be screened on Wednesday 2 November at 6pm in Manning Clark Theatre 5.
